2011 IN REVIEW

i. am. so. outdated.
This is my 2011 year-end reflective update and it's already the 7th day of 2012.
Nvm. Lucky number. I embrace.

i have alot to say but no inspirational means to convey them in a manner that doesn't sound like some emo year-end rant. But i have been putting this off for so long la. Better just get it out of my system.

Firstly, i must say... 2011 treated me quite humanely.

Secondly, i love ice cream.

OK now that i've got that out of my system, let me run through the highlights of my year..

- i visited Bangkok and had a taste of Chatuchak. Literally. Ate so much.

- i left my Art Director position at 8TV to merealisasikan a very scary fantasy of mine (with the accompaniment of a close friend)

- Splurged on Singapore trips for the enriching experience of Lion King: The Musical. as well as the recent Wicked: The Musical.

- Went on our 1st ever frenfren group trip thing to Lang Tengah. (weird cuz we've known each other for so long but NEVER managed to go on a holiday before)

- Purchased my 1st ever DSLR camera. and proceeded to experiment.

- Purchased my 1st ever Smart Phone. and proceeded to discover Twitter.

- u know wat. 2011 will be the year that i became heavily "involved" in Twitter. No thanks to the funness of social media and my shyness for a real social life.

- oh. and i had my 1st ever major Surgery in my life. (sorta. or maybe i mean major COSTING surgery)

May 2012 bring forth more mutations of positive outcome!

SPLURGED ON A DSLR

So after contemplating a DSLR for the longest time, i finally pulled my balls (and limbs and any other part of the body worth anything) together, surveyed the shops in 1U (cuz its near and i dun need to stress about cab fairs and distance and more stress) and gutted out my 4.3k on the CANON EOS 60D. (original price 4.1k + free 16G SD card + 18-135mm lens) i added on an extra hi-speed 16G SD card and swapped the flimsy tripod for a more stable one.

i got it from Foto Shangri-La and the sales person there gave me an impeccable deal.

Well. In my opinion, a good deal la.

Other shops were offering 4.5++ and NO 16G SD card and NO tripod even.
They even said that they weren't willing to swap the uber fugly red CANON bag for a cooler black one since it was free. Pfft.

The dude at FotoShangrila spent a whole friggin hour giving me the 101 of using a DSLR camera right there in the shop when i said i didnt know squat about apertures and iso and shutterspeeds. (Got la abit abit from college but i nicely gave back to lecturer already..heh.)

THAT's what you call good service. #SOLD

The other sales persons in the other rival cam shops just didnt make me feel "important" enough for me to fork out my hard earned mothurreffing 4k lor.

Either felt like they were too lansi. or too lacking in knowledge.

ANYWAY the main reason i have been wanting a camera like this was to experiment with videos.

To say that i am not a photo enthusiast would be a lil harsh but i guess i'm just not riding on the wave of still photography.
YET.
Mainly cuz its just too hard.
And i lazy to learn.

But I was, however, not lazy to put my vid shooting amateur skills to the test.

THE CRUSTACEAN INVASION

It's no secret that i was made to dress up in a rather uncustomary suit recently for a commercial shoot whom an industry friend suggested i "try out".

heads will roll. and so they did.

Considering my very limited TVC experience, I eventually got the role. did the deed. and the completed commercial recently went on air.

And i must say i look particularly awkward to say the least.

Dunno why u all say its funny lor. i didnt laugh. u all laugh so loud for wat?
(must be one of those "when u see urself on camera u're just too selfconsious to find it LOLable" situations. )

Oh well. i still think everyone did an amazing job on set though.
Helpers helped.
Lighters lit.
Shooters shot.
Directors forced us retake each scene again and again and again until our costumes were drenched in our salty bodily residue.

Hear ye hear ye.
And behold thee, the making of an orange seabug.

We managed to wrap by 7pm++.

Which is downright early in my experience.

Sweat like mad.
Good workout.
I swear i felt 10kgs lighter by the end of the day.
(which i have no doubt gained back by now la. sob.)

Is it a designer thing to be able to whip-out some of best designs (subject to opinion, of course) for a client in 1 day or 2 but whimper in agony when it comes to designing a personal project?

When MizzKoh and I started the company that is our businesslovechild, we had so many ideas of how it should look and what persona it should carry and which direction it should follow.

But now that we are getting into the specifics of the so-called "brand identity", we are just killing ourselves trying to get it perfectly right.

We wanted it to look funny. but then after a month we were afraid we didnt look "professional" enough.
We wanted the colours to feel loud and bold, but in the following weeks we came to really appreciate the beauty of a pastel/beige-driven scheme.

We talked about the importance of namecards, but for the card to work, we need to nail down the look, which we dun want to rush out in fear of the impending sienness it could bring.

headache until can die.

I remember Art classes back in Primary School where i'd be gilehappybabi drawing anything according to the theme of the day, but when the teacher handed us a blank piece of art block and told us to "zi you fa hui" (free to express), i panic instantly. Cause there was just too much i wanted to "fa hui" until i dunno where to start.

Give me a full brief with details and i can cook up a storm but hand me a blank sheet and i'll fold.
Too much goes on in my head until i dunno where to start from.

LANG TENGAH 2011

Despite knowing these people for nearly 10 years, we have NEVER gone on a holiday before.

FYI by holiday, i dun mean 1 day outings where we spend half the day in the car and 3 hours in a mamak stall.

i'm referring to an actual holiday. where we fly. we get in a van together. we get chauffeured to a foreign place (and not fight about who fetches who or who takes turn to drive who where) and then we just lepak for afew days (and not worry about where to go what to do or how to get where).

So anyway after much discussion (in FB, no doubt. love technology and how its destroying our human-to-human interaction. luvit! ) we settled on Lang Tengah.

This was actually the 2nd time oWaiYee and myself were setting foot on the nice ~~sharp corals~~ sands on this island. Our virgin trip here happened 2 years ago. (here. here. and here.) but we stayed in a different hotel on the other side of the island. (which is also reachable by foot)

but somehow this time... the rocks seemed... shorter.

maybe we got taller.
maybe the sand washed in and elevated the ground.
maybe the world is coming to an end.

i dunno la... but either way it was still damn fun.

just chillin and laying there with no 58342083958034 things on ur mind.

And surprise surprise it was during one finely served BBQ dinner one day that the Hotel staff came running over to our table and asked if we wanted to see one of the most beautiful things a beach trip could offer - a turtle laying her eggs.

WAH i tell u i literally sprang up wanna fly already.

Our trusty Hotel man lead us to the location not too far away and we managed to witness this fragile creature going about her natural course. Of course with this taking place, the onlookers were beginning to pile up closer and closer till it reached a point that i started to suspect that these people were after more than just a nice glimps of the poor thing.

i really think that they were after her eggs.

When she was done everyone was too busy pulling a paparazzo on the poor thing i think we had it traumatised for life la.

i was thinking "GOOD. pls dun come back. too unsafe for u here."

the poor thing actually got stuck when it was making her way out back to the sea. I'm quite certain if we werent there to help her out she wouldve been maggot food.

FIELD TRIP USA: YEAR 2 PRESS CONFERENCE

ARGH looks like another long drought of MIA from blogging.

CANNOT CANNOT. tat's no way to treat a blog i've kept alive for so many years.

Therefore, a quick update:

work has been pretty good.

Just completed the graphics for Field Trip USA: Year 2 on 8TV and we were invited to the press conference at Pavilion few days ago.

Entrance gate. like stepping into my old workplace liddat.

Watching these younglings at the Press Conference really reminded me of how i was when i was (urgh. here it comes..) their age.
u know.. noob dude attending events like this with a bunch of friends you just came to acquaint with.
Laughing extra loud at random bits of inside jokes when ur friends' get coverage on the show.
Basking in butterflies while enjoying your time in the spotlight when asked to go on stage to share ur experience.

Puan Tan aka the mother, has officially closed the chapter in her life as a government servant for SJK Chan Wa High School, Seremban.

Yes dear spoilt students of today, Pn Tan has retired from teaching.

I have finally set up a partnership with the (in)famously voluptuous Tsu Ann.

1) - i have left 8TV.

good 4 years of my life.
Dun regret a thing.

seen alot. learnt a tonne.
time to move on.

but alas, unemployed but not uninspired.

big plans for my future i have.
and i think i've reached a point where i am ready to take on the uncertainties that have plagued the back of my head all this while. wont deny that it scares me shitless to the core... but aiyah dun care la. just do. dun think. just do.

2) - i have an iPhone.

yes the one thing i have sworn never to consent to has proven to be my own undoing.

the instant tweets and fb access.

the satisfaction of watching EVERYONE around u have the same exact thing u have in ur hand thus eliminating individuality.

of course this also means more moolah down the flush hole of "wants" instead of "needs".

Therefore transforming the "want" into a "need".

3) - Teo Heng karaoke rocks!

my misconception towards the small-spaced, dodgy-looking new cina karaoke joint in town is precisely what it is... a misconception!

Because they really do seem all roundly better in terms of value for money and sound system.

plus they've got touch screen song selection! And their eng song choices are really not bad.

the only flaw i can pinpoint is that their song listing system is a tad hard to navigate and pick.

BUT still. u get what you pay for and the place is dopper than those super kau ex redbox/neway u see in supercrowded malls nowadays.

4) - Lion King: the Musical was profoundly surreal.

Tagged along the bro and gang for a weekend trip down Singapore for the show and wow it really was good. (i know which part made Owhy trauma during the show liao haha). Watching the 1st song before my eyes literally made me tear and excrete shivers of goosebumps all over. This was THE song la. childhood playlist overload song.

i am aware that we were not allowed any sort of
phototaking but u know me.. "rebel" spelt on my forehead and in my gut.

and we were forced to wait outside the hall for the 'Circle of life' troupe to stampede their way onto the stage from the back entrance before we, the latecomer audience, were allowed in.

Blame it on poor time estimation and our slow unrunnable feet on foreign ground.

FLOWAH POWAH PROPS

i recently completed a project (well. only 50% if u count editing) that really took alot out of me physically.

it was a shoot for May's Newbies and i had come to the painful yet exploratory decision to hand-draw the entire prop list for the set.

yes foolish i know.

But the pent up illustrator in me (not the ADOBE kind) was just kicking and clawing so hard i had to oblige.

Inside i was just thinking "Aiyah once in awhile do something like this wont kill me la."

So i went through with it.

Spent 3 whole days just squatting and painting on the nice freezing rainbow concrete floor till 3 or 4am.

Had feet, thigh and back aches after.

But honestly, it was all worth it.

pretty no?

FlyFm DJ/Quickie Host, Zher, was especially nice and
it was very flattering to have her grace this set.

Working with her was such a breezy joy.

A male talent simply would not have worked for this concept.

Now i can sleep.

Next up, post production hell.

SATURDAY STRESSGILEBABI

Is it a mental disorder if u wake up in the morning and u are immediately hit by a feeling of anxiousness and stress on a supposed carefree Saturday?

because at this point, i really think that i have issues. SERIOUS issues.

woke up at 11am. Later than my usual wakeuptime by 2 hours. (due to a late LATE night of pent-up karaoke-ing and screamfest-ing ) started analyising things that i had wanted to do throughout the week but had absolutely NO time to execute.

and thats when it started.

The to-do's just kept hitting like a blizzardry apocalyptic meteor shower.

Cleaning la. Gyming la. Blogging la. Napping la.
These things may sound simple enough but they ALL take hours to complete. Hours which ultimately need to be planned out explicitly.

Haiyoh the technicalities and calculations i had to do to plan the order of these things. Headache also.

OK since i have woken up 3 hours late. I need to grab something to eat before gymming. Cant train if the bottomless abyss aka my tummy is empty. And I cant gym in a full stomach as well, and technically 11am is already lunch time, so, lunch 1^st. Then wait 2 hours. Then gym. In these 2 hours, I can squeeze in sometime to clean my livingroom which is still bertaburan-ed with my weeklong paint marathon residue. But if I head off to the gym I HAVE to be back by 530 cuz at 630 i need to headout to give loudsomefunsomecheers to a friend’s birthday dinner. Which only gives me about an hour or so to squeeze in a blog session here and there before the dinner. And at this point, a nap would look highly impossible unless I give up gymming. Or unless I do it at night. But a night nap wouldn’t be considered a nap anymore, that’s called sleep. Deep open-your-eyes-after-and-it’s-Sunday-already sleep.

Oh and I need to gym tmrw as well cuz my body cant really take extreme cardio and weights back-to-back. So today it would be weights. And tmrw would be cardio. I think I’m gonna die at the Energizer Night Run if I dun push my body to train like a steroid-infused hamster on a running wheel soon!

BANGING BANGKOK (Part I)

Despite my very obviously enlarged nostrils (so says the colleagues) and still recuperating nose, i managed to sneak in a small trip to Bangkok to pile on the massive amounts of MCs/Leaves i took from work.

Seriously, the good doc was not holding back AT ALL in handing me MC's.
i swear in my head it was ringing "JACKPOT!!"everytime he waved one in my face.
and what crazy person would say no to those lovely, lovely pieces of paper hor?

i take la of course. Almost got into shit at the office for having so many MC's in a month.

ANYWAY

It was indeed my 1st time stepping into the land of 'sawadeekraps', ladyboys and happy ending massages and i must say i felt absurdly retarded and completely lost. most of the time.

Every corner and every turn of a signboard was like a doodle code i had to decipher to get around. And god knows how much i just LURVE a good mind boggle on a carefree holiday trip - FYI: Not at all.

This little experience has further strengthened my firm belief that i will not be able to survive in a country that does not embrace English as its main communication lingo. Yeah. It's English or perish for me.

Also, another thing i noticed at 1st scan around the city,
was their very super uber canggihfied electrical lines.

Which is literally just dangling in knot after knot along public walkways everywhere.

For some reason, I kept seeing flashes of Final Destination when i see these lines.

Other than admiring the circuits of Bangkok, i was also diverting my attention span to afew other new sights.

Like striking pink cabbies!

...which were really quite heaven sent.

It's like you can flag down one of these cabs ANYWHERE on the road at ANYGODGIVEN time and the nice cabs would stop stiff on the road for you to get in. And the best part is, the cars behind DON'T honk like the rude overpossesive overcibai-ed drivers here.

Cabs are also cheaper there compared to the cuthroat prices here.

In mathematical terms of rounding up numbers, i would be 30.

But thank god the accurate calculation according to my birth certificate is still within the vicinity of a just-turned (longoverdue) happy (barely) healthy (hopefully) 26 year-old which came to pass about 2 weeks ago.

In the midst of scouring through an early life crisis, uncertain future thinkings, and insomnia, the lovely lovely people around me managed to pull me out of despair and slip in some much appreciated fiesta fun i had been desperately craving for.

There was song.

There was dance.

There was frolicking and clandestine touching.

...and there was Bieber.

and me.

and Scott Pilgrim.

At the end of the day every humans had smiles imprinted on their faces.

...except for a minor snafu when the housebunneighshoy dropped precious money all over the unknown land of can't remember where. poor thing. money rocks ok?!

I swear it was agonizing as hell ~~and i cried like a baby.~~

So this is the immediate aftermath of the entire ordeal.

and this is the reward i got to take back for my bravery.

Sculpting my mashed up insides so that my humanly proboscis may yet stand a whiff at life.

Doc yanked the whole set of twins out in 1 mighty pull.

i was literally still tearing and bleeding while telling the nurse i wanted to keep the tubes.

The conversation went something like this:

me: "can i keep those?"

nurse: "yes darling. I'll wash it and then give you later."
me: "no need."
nurse: "oh no need to give u?"
me: "no need to wash."

Oh the wonders a night of insomnia(ma) can do to your stagnant list of to-dos can sometimes be so friggin satisfying.

I was tossing and turning in bed and when the lids refused to transport my mind to slumberville, so I decide to hop back up and actually started paving my online portfolio - which by the way - i have been begging and hammering and urrrrg(h)ing my procrastinatively stubborn conscience to do since the pre-dates of dates.

One thing led to another and it sorta became a lil obsession of mine for a certain time frame of 3am - 5am. u know... like how your heart beats fast and your palm turns sweaty and your leg can't stop taping and waging like you're high on something at 4am? Ya. It's like that. i managed to get some forced shuteye after 5. Then yanked the lids open and jumped straight into it again from 9am - 2pm.

before i knew it, it was done!

Still trying to figure out some minor details (ok maybe not so minor cuz i bloody hell want it to be perfect and cant stop OCDing about it) like how to canggihfy the header; how to add in segments so there's a more systematic navigation going on; how to add in a link to my contact details somewhere ~~and how to infect other cooler, awesomer portfolio sites with virus~~ - BUT overall it doesnt make me wanna puke at my own shit. So it's passable. I leeched off tumblr's free themes so i dont have full reign over the layout. (And also because i know shit about html.)

MY NOSE JOB

So the story goes that one was admitted to Tropicana Medical Center with the excuse that not only was he experiencing slow death by massive massive sneeze waves, but was told after numerous visits to the doc, that his nose bone was indeed mutating into something that was blocking his breathing passageway and causing internal inflammations to occur.

So howdydoo what better way to tackle the problem at hand but to admit one's self to a quickie simple basic surgery that would change one’s nasally problems for good right?

WRONG.

Little did one know the magnitude of mayhem one was getting one's self into.
Here are some recollections....

blood stains on the curtains.
makes one wonder what gruesome stories these stains could tell...

A couple of noteworthy mayhems to remind one's self:

1 – Anesthesia does NOT make you feel high. It makes you feel like crap.

I woke up with a splitting head + neck ache. My insides wanted to be outside. But the experience of post anesthesia really does feel like you’re fading in and out of a dream state. You hear the muffled voices. You zone in and out of the ceiling hospital lights in your face. And soon as you know it you’re back at your nice hospital bed with an excruciatingly bad ass nose sting.

It was weird. I dun even remember KO-ing. A moment the doc was explaining the process of it whilst pumping in the oddly cold meds into my veins and covering my airholes with a mask. And then the next i remember dreamland. literally. i was dreaming (or not?) while doc was operating me on the table.

2 – Always ALWAYS bring extra reading material if u are admitted.

I brought magazines and finished them by midnight. Which left me another 12 hours before the next doc checkup. Time passed soooooo slowly I was waking up from my sleep every 2 hours hoping it was at least 6am which only brought forth disappointment when I came to realize it was 2. I was tormented in boredom.

3 – Hospital patient uniforms are NOT sexy

You can never feel enough awkwardness whenever a stranger in uniform tells you to “wear this” and “underwear also take off, ok?” followed by a polite smile. Especially when it's said in a room full of fully clothed people.

The Operation Uniform had a 1 piece skirt slit so high cheongsams would look at it and detest in freakout-conservative-mum-manner going “Oh no young lady!!! if YOU think you’re wearing THAT to the party you must be joking!”

Not sexy yo.
Not even close.

Plus I felt naked.

4 – Paying the hospital bills before u head home sucks if you have NEVER paid such a astronomic amount before in your entire petty poor life.

You see, my bff’s - stupidity and ignorance - told me my debit card would be able to cover the whopping 10k bill (YES. Muthafuthafriggin 10K!) at one swipe, but 4 rejected swipes and 2 fruitless calls to Maybank Customer care later, I knew I had to think of other means to settle the payment.

So I had to put on my boyish charm, flash my milliondolla smile, and request the direction of the nearest ATM.

Turns out. It was at the gas station opposite the road. Fine.

I tell them to hold on to my bags.

I stand up in upmost pride. Walk out the door. Cross the road. Get to the station. Withdraw my novel-thick cash. Walk back in. Hand the cash to the counter. Only to realize I had miscalculated the amount and was doomed to repeat the entire process of walking out and risking my life crossing the 马路入虎口road. A-friggin-gain.

I know right? FML.

Post-surgery nose was bleeding and oozing mucus blood the whole time.

ANYWAY.........

Was a good experience.

1^st time being admitted and 1^st time going under the knife.

Till this day I wasn’t sure if the jittery butterflies in my stomach during the wait in the Pre-Op room was of fear or fascination.

It’s exactly how it is in the movies. You get carted into the rooms. All you see are the florescent ceiling lights flashing across your sight like names going up on a credit page after the show ends.

I could not taste / smell anything after the surgery. So every single meal that appeared before me just felt like chunks of tasteless things I had to devour to end the hunger. OH WHICH REMINDS ME: another noteworthy point!.........

5 - Always sneak in extra sachets of FOOD when you’re admitted.

As if boredom wasn’t bad enough, my humanly desires to feed were at full swing and making a wracket the WHOLE in-between-meal time. I could’ve sworn my tummygrowls scared the shit out of the kids at the pediatric ward next door.

i attended a Voice Over Recording open audition for MediaPrima staff some time ago and did the whatnots and shindigs required for the open-call and had my whinny gibberish voice tested if it could actually be conceived by the human ear.

And then i left and continued with my daily crap as usual.

And then yesterday i actually got called back for an official recording for a client.

So voila.

This here is my 1st ever official VO Recording for a radio commercial. (paired with Salina from ntv7.) to be aired on FlyFm. i think.

Simple and nothing massively mindblowing but... heh.

considering my financial status and state of mind, i'll take what i can get.

...and i completed this miraculous deed in just 2 bloody days.

But the irony is..

it was a friggin depressing book.

A true story that made me sigh and frown and wince in cringeworthy spasms as i was flipping through the pages seated on my plastic cheapo room chair.

I Seludup-ed the book from under the nose of the notoriously nonchalant Swen

and she didnt even notice until i started tweeting about it.

It's no bestseller or whitbread winner.

But it's nice enuf for an engaging read.

i couldnt put it down once i started.

It's filled with pedophilic attacks by a monstrously devious Grandfather who couldn't restrain his sadistic fetishes on his own flesh and blood.

I was in agony imagining this 9 year old girl getting constantly raped and tortured by her grandad. Poor lil thing. Her survival story is truly an inspiration. Nah THIS IS THE BOOK.

I am feeling quaintly artsy and expressively expressive.
Therefore, i shall lament my recent Christmas escapade in the form of self-indulgent poetry.

As the joyous end of 2010 comes near,
Wallets and bank accounts sigh in fear,
The uproarious and yuletide season of giving,
Descents upon our daily living.

Presents and trees and decorations and lights,
Are indeed the things i cannot lose in sight,
But this year i decided to spread more cheer,
Cuz' God knows it's been a bitter year.
(paycheck conflicts, workspace antics, management politics and laziness tactics)

I turn my head, i grip my fist, i push my posture high,
I will not, cannot, stand another moment in depression plight,
So i declare emotional ignorance and pick my next procession,
And i approach dear Swen in a last bid for redemption,
"Oh please oh please let me join your cause"
"I want to feel loved instead of being perved".

"Come to church this Friday! we'll fix you up with something you can harold"
Swen pats my shoulder as she invites me for a plan to behold.

With that, i found myself performing the deed,
Of donning a religious coat of festivity in need.
It wasnt easy i have to say,
It wasnt a cuppa tea, to my dismay.

There were steps to remember,

But alas it was fun and thrilling and lots of carpooling
- Embracing the Caroling.

We tackled a sign language song,
That sent me on a confusion throng,
We suited up in pitch black,

My commitment was limited,
As regretful as admitted,
But i pray i did not offend the many,

so I've been swiping that wretched card at any god-given opportunity dangled in my face so far and am feeling the scorching aftermath of some very splurgetastic items.

OK la so maybe a veteran shopawhorelic would glance at me and pffft my amateur buying power off but still.... i never spend so much money on a pair of shoes and a shirt hokay?! (and much more things on my to-splurge list)

i'm running low on the fuel of life.

I think i've reached a point in time where i feel that appearance and 1st impression is most definitely close to essential la. As impossible as it sounds, i shall dedicate the next few months to investing in this shallow cause and bulldoze my way into extravagant outlets and shiny boutiques i would, on a normal basis, never browse / whiff / set foot in. How absurdly cool of a challenge is that? (talk like i'm some commited 讲到做到 sorta fella right?)

Workwise it's been helping me alot to go out and actually meet people instead of the constant hi-bye acquaintances i've been caging myself in for the past 3 years or so.

New outlook on life i guess.

Rest assured at the end of the day i will still retreat to my sanctum sanctuary of solitude and dust-filled shelves when the sun goes down and the curtains are drawn. But really, i will don a mask and my flash fixture of pearly whites when dawn cometh.

OK, am off to scavenge through the Pelangi dump sites and garbage cans in search of extra pennies for side income now.

So for the past several weeks, the humble spectrum of Pelangi was thoroughly and evidently ransacked, rumbled and rectified to suit the Europeanal (catch the pun) needs of 3 Frenchies. 2 of whom I had met on THIS trip 2 years ago and then again on THIS trip a year ago.

So being the giving obliging kindhearted person I was, it was my time to don the tour-guide cape and fulfill my superhuman duties of the know-it-all local sight seeing extraordinaire. I is SuperGuide - Saving the French from confusion and catastrophe. One trip at a time.

Basically, this group of blonde haired bimbs (and bimbette (yes a male bimbo is a bimbette. not a himbo. because I SAY so.) were drifting in and out of my life like the hangat hangatness of a tahi ayam. One moment they were there occupying the throne sofas of the apartment with their turtle bags and overdue laundry. And the next, they vanish with nothing but a brief note left on the room door announcing their departure.

I had the bloody shock of my life towards the end of the note.
The PC really was not working that day.
Had to carry to workshop again and flush down RM180 on a new power supply.
Argh.

But of course, that's how life is with backpacking drifters.
Forever nomads.
Never settling.

So anyway.
Photos speak a thousand paragraphs.

This was when I made my way to KLIA to welcome them with asian arms wide open.

And this was the VIP treatment showered upon their angmo faces upon arrival into Pelangi.

Sorry no flowery tropical rainbow neck garland.

Introduced them to the rainbow family of weirdos, freakos and fish.

Practiced leniency towards my things and the hands that lay on them.

Engaged in painfully intense ice-breakers as warm up.

Gave them their privacy to do whatever it is that they wanna do with/on each other when needed. (However traumatizing it was to my human eyes.)

Embraced their day to day rituals with a non-judgmental peace of mind.

Made sure they were dressed appropriately when outdoors.

Temaned them climb cave.

followed them into the deepest darkest abyss of the Aquaria tunnel of awesome fishness.

Hiked up KL Tower with them.

Became their photographer when posing with prominently tall buildings.

Let them have their way with me when verbal communication grew weary and yawnsome.

Executed the ultimate Msian deed of overwhelming their tastebuds with over-oily over-fattening local munchables.

OK so not all that were consumed were authentically local.
BUT hey. wat angmo wants angmo gets.

(Apparently Sushi costs a private island and jet over there in their homeland and its dirt cheap here. So every turn of a Jap restaurant we passed, you could literally see the sparkle in their eyes when checking out the prices.)

Showed them the results of what raw Malaysian stupidity means.

Experienced temporary power failure and spent the day in darkness.
All because responsible me forgot to pay the bills.
I know.
True Malaysian spirit indeed.
Namewee would be proud.

Tragedy also befell upon the setting of the sun of the 2nd day of the French invasion.

Came home to a frantic Danny mopping the floor in a state of shock and trauma.
Apparently the Aquarealm had been squirting water out the whole day and no one was home to stop the excessive flow of water from flooding the floor. Mattresses were the drenched victims and we were 2ndary casualties.

Ended up digging out dustfilled comforters and blowdrying mattresses for sleep.

I think the french actually found the situation amusing.

hell hath no fury like the month of september.

been crazy shitty rushing for datelines the past few weeks and was constantly self chanting and bosanova-listening to calm the impending stressplosion within. (geddit? stress + explosion. geddit?) u know, the mantra of how reminding one's self of counting one's blessings and be thankful for the little little things in one's life. Must. Chant. Must. Smile. Must. Breathe.

I now understand the full extend of how ironic things can be sometimes.

One moment you're running through ur breeze of downloads planning what to watch and when. and the next you're face down on ur office desk at 2am cursing the mudpile of psd and mpegs u need to send out to whomever for whatever.

A month ago TheOneAcademy (helloooo figures) approached us and asked if we wanted to be guest speakers for their 360 Starlites week. Naturally, we were hesitant. i just didnt feel comfortable (or worthy) speaking to students about work that i am usually not satisfied with myself. It's weird. But being the responsible gile glamour ppl we were, we eventually agreed.

that was a month ago.

Fast forward to present day and voila - no surprise that work-swamp and proactive-procrastination hath' prevented us from touching on any sort of preparation for it. (typical). therefore. we panic and plonk together a cincai load of work and slap on our smiliest smiles to young fresh curious meat in the TOA auditorium.

Students were an enjoyable crowd.

MASKED BLACK BLESSINGS

Sometimes i really think the unfortunate tragedies that befall us are actually blessings in disguise if we just step back, squat, lean in, bend over and tilt our heads to get a different perspective on things.

I experienced such a event 2 days ago.

Woke up. Realised PC crashed through the night.

Tried starting up.

Flickered with light for a moment before shutting down again automatically.

Problem persisted the next few 42382095842343290 rounds of tries.

Cursed. Clenched fist. Kicked stuff around room. Karate chopped cupboard.

Concluded that, once again, it was time for PC to let me down.

Decided to engage in immediate professional assistance.

Unplugged everything. Carried CPU down to Taxi uncles waiting at overhead bridge.

Got in. Dropped off at IKANO. Dragged myself up to 2nd floor.

Seeked ALL-IT's service counter.

Problem detected. Problem solved. 2 hour intermission wait.

Affordable fees of RM21 to fix CPU. No problem. Pay.

Had solo lunch in Cinelei... i mean..err.. e@Curve. (lousy name)

Carried fixed CPU down to nearby Taxi uncle.

Taxi uncle wanted to slaughter my wallet. RM15. Blah.

Crossed road with CPU in arms to seek different taxi uncle on opposite lane.

Taxi uncle told me to cross back over to taxi uncles waiting opposite road - Which was where i was at earlier. Blah.

Crossed back over.

Flagged down (miraculously) different incoming taxi uncle.

Got in. Dropped off at Rainbow.

Lifted up to 18th floor.

Stepped in room by 2.30pm.

Barely 5 minutes into Windows startup screen when rain started pouring outside.

i sigh with relief.

Blessing-in-disguise check-list:

1) PC crashing couldve happened on a friggin workday and cause me even more rushing shitcrap running around BUT didn't. Could've. BUT didnt. Chose to happen on a holiday. Which i am grateful for. More time to sort things out. Less stress.

2) Rain commenced AFTER stepping into safety zone. Which saved me a great deal of trauma and awkward CPU-running. Rain Could've drenched me (and more importantly, CPU). BUT didnt. Which i am grateful for.

3) Repair could've cost much much more. But nice service counter repair fella found loophole for spare part in the end. Only paid for service charge. (original RM30. members price RM21. Awesome.) Could've cost more. BUT didn't.

4) Could've pokai-ed whilst whisking around CPU in hand and once again lose all sense of dignity by crying in public if CPU broke into a million pieces. BUT didn't. Could've. BUT didn't.

Attended the launching of tonton.com.my @ Sunway Pyramid convention centre the other day and realised that people at the event were exchanging hidden meaning winks everytime my name came up during the introductory stages of our mingling sessions.

Everytime significantly scandalous words like "satisfaction" or "jaemy" came up, u can see the brows slant as the unsaid elephant-in-the-room glances shift from me to the colleague standing next to me for affirmation of some punchline that i wasn't in on. This carried on until someone bursted the bubble of the day. but even then i was still blur and enjoying the privileges of being the mayor of cluelessville.

Then i went back to office today and saw this.

...and the whole world made sense.

i have finafrigginly obtained the fame i have longed for since longtime longing.

and u know wat the experts say la - no publicity is bad publicity.

i really really likey the new way facebook layouts their photos now.

They arranged everything in 1 long page compared to what they used to do previously where you need to click 1 page after another after another until you damn sien and give up all together browsing cuz it was taking too long to load. (somemore if you're browsing for certain pics you take dunno how many umpteen years before you actually find it)

They made the browsing images larger, distanced narrower and cropped much neater now.

Ah.

Now when i click on photo albums i dun mind waiting for the photos to load so i can stare at the neatly arranged collage of pics in full window view.

Like you could just capture scrn and printout and it would be an awesome poster on your uninspiringly bare room wall that you never had the motivation to jazz up due to whogivesafrak.

..or maybe its just cuz my photo skills are just dropdead kickassly topnotch that they cant help but look so damn good when placed together correctly.

SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE

Toilet/shave jokes were biggest LOL parts of the film.
cant say it was anything more than that.
Its a pity cuz there could've been some sort of a "MeanGirls" effect going on here.

MeanGirls effect - brainless bimbo/himbo humour with pinch of depth applicable to reality. and makes you like it. and watch it. repeatedly.

Ah. THE film on everyone's lips now.
The topic of everyone's movie conversation.
The icebreaking opener for film discussions.

Expectations pretty much killed this for me.
Yup.
The word around the street got to me and i had subconsciously/accidentally placed this movie skyhigh on my expectations list and of course when you expect it to be good - couldnt help it - it always ends up bad. Not BAD bad. Just mediocrely bad.

Dun get me wrong. I think it's an awesome film with a stellar cast and a kickass concept really. but i walked out of the cinema feeling......... expected. Like nothing surprising happened. Nothing that made me clinch my fist and demand more. Blame my eavesdropping curiosity and penchant to follow mass audience movie blabbers.

Loved the dream timezone slowmo bits at the end.
Oh well.

I give it 4/5 Layers of Dreams.

Heard some bad reviews. Watched it. Ended up liking this movie.
So ya see. Expectations can make or break a movie experience.
I think i should start doing what thebrother does by steering clear of any known media coverage of movies i wanna watch from now on. Blocks out the foreign influences.

Was thoroughly impressed by the CGI!
Was immensely disappointed that cina contactlensed dragonwizard clawdude had so damn little screen time!

You can... get sickly contaminated by chicken rice da-baued from a regularly visited restaurant and end up moaning and groaning your friday night away in so much cold-sweat agony that you force yourself up at 4am and drag ur numb feet to the 7-11 opposite your apartment for Panadol because you 1) realise u can no longer tolerate the pain and.. 2) realise you don't have any Panadol with you.

You can... miss a much anticipated Saturday night friendgang gathering because of darn chicken rice contamination and be deprived of much needed laughter, joy and ego-kutuking jokes and appear NOT to appear in any of the facebook photos uploaded the very next day, once again because you were too busy containing the crap that somehow kept leaking from the side of your butt cheeks everytime you fart.

You can... cause the potential death of an innocent human being who was only doing his job because you were too damn lazy to call for delivery from another place of eateries (see la somehow OldTown is the ONLY place you can order food from that guarantees you FAST delivery and ZERO fatality.) Ya. Your McD delivery dinner was involved in a tragic road accident and you were the cause of it. Probably collided with some other nonsensical driver who wasnt as hungry as you were at time of impact.

Thankfully. 2nd batch of delivery edibles arrived safe and sound and my god it was heavenly.

Never tasted Bubur Ayam so good before.

Co-directed a shoot yesterday.
T'was a Merdeka promo campaign that required a hellota props, shitload of on-the-spot improv and precise timing for movements.

fatiguely tiring.

Was supposed to end by 6pm.

Ended at bladi 11.

Argh.

All i can say is, you can never have too much planning for shoots.

I have to admit that i did not have the proper planning for this one due to the fact that shit is shat everywhere and everyone steps on them once in awhile and groans in agony and curses the world when it happens and there's nuthin' yo can do 'boutit really ~~but go home and cry to mummy.~~

Now i understand how some movies are re-written and re-done and re-written again and again before they get that proper kickstart overdrive.

I was crackin my head trying to piece the 874237432840834 jigsaw puzzle together for weeks before finally settling with something close to my liking.

And even that i wasnt completely satisfied.

Budget wise, bosses were hammering 1 single message into our heads during meetings:

Kiamsapz.

I was also not prepared for the unforeseen circumstances that befell us when a whole memory card's raw footages were tragically deleted by someone from the crew. We were forced to re-shoot a handful of scenes because of this mishap. Bummerz.

To add salt, there was another separate crew that was scheduled to built a new set for another shoot at the very same location that same night immediately after our shoot (which was scheduled to end at 6) and we had tonnes more to cover.

therefore, you get yourself the perfect Kodak moment of chaos:

- cheap-ass budget.
- killertight schedule

- lackness of manpower.

- amateur experience.
- other crews standing around cock eye-ing us with crossed arms impatiently tapping frustfeet on floor for us to wrap up so they can proceed with THEIR set up

We waved a tear-jerk heart-felt goodbye to our dear brownhairedbrother 2 weeks ago.
By 'tear-jerk' i meant joy.
By 'heart-feal't i meant clapping and cheering and celebrating overload on the inside.

With the blink of a darkcircled eye, it has been a year since we welcomed the whiteboi into our humble luvhouse of endless nags, overwhelming housechores and 0-tolerance towards profanities.

We sighed in absolute grief and mourned in mucus-filled nostrils as we sent him packing back to the sausage cave from which he crawled from after a-year-long stint of living in Msia as an exchange student.

Was at St Francis Xavier's church the other day to witness colleague Li Ann berid of her bachelorettehood in holy matrimony to Benji.

Was a tiring day indeed because a certain restaurant had misinformed us of a certain item that was supposedly purchasable as a gift and when we got there *cough* Tenji *cough* we were told to get lost.

A pretty demoralizing way to start the day if i do say so myself.

Ended up rush-scouting/purchasing another prezie and then realising that it was not obtainable that day, so we scribbled love letters and threw it into a nice packet and wrapped it up with all the TLC we could conjoure up for the day and presented it to the blushing couple as a face-saving gift. Phew.
